Athletic Brewing Review
Which Athletic beers I would buy first, which ones belong in the fridge, and where the lineup is strongest.
Athletic is usually the first non-alcoholic brewery people hear about, and that creates a weird problem: the brand is popular enough that some drinkers assume it is overhyped before they try it.
I would not dismiss it that quickly. Athletic’s best cans work because they do not all chase the same drinker. Run Wild is the drier IPA. Free Wave is the softer hazy IPA. Upside Dawn is lighter and less hop-driven. Athletic Lite is there for the cooler. Atlética covers the Mexican-style beer slot. All Out is for people who still want dark beer after dinner or with cold-weather food.
The brand is not perfect. Some cans are more convincing than others, and people who want a sharp German pilsner may still prefer Bitburger, Clausthaler, or another import. But Athletic remains one of the easiest breweries to recommend because most people can find at least one can in the lineup that matches how they already drink beer.
Where to buy
ProofNoMore is the first place I would check for Athletic singles or mixed beer orders. Amazon can make sense for packs when stock and price line up.
What to try first
If you are buying Athletic for the first time, I would start with Free Wave or Run Wild. They show the two sides of the brewery most clearly.
Free Wave is the can for hazy IPA drinkers. It has more citrus and tropical fruit, and it is easier to drink if you want softness instead of a bitter finish.
Run Wild is the better can if you miss a more classic IPA. It is drier, a little firmer, and less juicy. I would reach for it with burgers, pizza, tacos, or anything where a sweeter beer would get annoying.
Where the rest of the lineup fits
Upside Dawn is the can I would buy for someone who does not want a hop fight. It is lighter and more relaxed than the IPAs, which makes it better for lunch, beach food, and casual daytime drinking.
Athletic Lite is not trying to be the most interesting can in the fridge. That is the point. It is for people who want a cold light beer without thinking too much about it.
Atlética belongs with lime, chips, grilled food, and the kind of meal where a Mexican-style beer would normally make sense. All Out is the one to try if you miss darker beer and want roast, coffee, and chocolate notes instead of another IPA.
Who may not love Athletic
If your favorite beers are very crisp pilsners, Athletic may not be the first brand I would send you to. The brewery is strongest when hops, citrus, malt, or darker roast give the can a clear personality. For a sharper German-style beer, Bitburger, Clausthaler, Erdinger, or Weihenstephaner may be closer to what you want.
Bottom line
Athletic is still one of the safest first stops in non-alcoholic beer. Start with Free Wave if you like hazy IPA, Run Wild if you want more bite, Upside Dawn if you want something lighter, and All Out if you miss dark beer.
